Ypsilanti's first settlement, Woodruff's Grove, sat on the Huron River's east bank from April 1823, but the townsite that survived was platted a mile north in 1825 by Augustus Woodward, John Stewart, and William Harwood and named for General Demetrius Ypsilantis.
