A Mill Village Rebuilt After Fire
The site that became Manchester caught surveyor John Mudget Mack's eye in 1824 as good water power on the River Raisin; John Gilbert acted on that assessment, buying the land in 1826 and building the first mill there with Emanuel Case and Harry Gilbert in 1832 before platting the village a year later. Fire destroyed that original mill in 1853.
